“The work of artists is all around us,” Pratt professor Richard Hall once commented to a class of foundation art students. “We have our finger in everything!” The truth of this statement is perhaps most evident in the fact of graphic design, which colors nearly all that we set our eyes upon—from the most exalted to the most humdrum: movie titles on the big screen; storm warnings in white letters on red banners on the TV; the disposition of words upon a street sign; a logo on a sneaker; the instructions for proper brushing on our toothpaste.

“Graphic Design” presents a selection of work from the past decade with a focus on large-format illustrated books. Included here are designs for eminent publishers Rizzoli, Universe, and G. Editions, with featured subjects ranging from architecture and interior design to art photography by such trailblazers as Brooke Shaden (whose photographic creation appears below).
