“If the artist were to draw nature, everything as he or she saw it, the result would be chaos—nature is chaos. It’s the artist’s job to bring order out of chaos.”
— Richard Hall (1937–2002), painter, former Pratt Institute professor of art
The collection “Order in Chaos” gathers together a selection of work on canvas in oil paint and watercolor from a period of two decades. It is an exploration in an abstract expressionist mode of the artist’s thrill found in seeking meaning and order in pursuit of a personal aesthetics, a sense of “this is right,” in the struggle with chaos in color and medium.
